Executive Summary

The project’s goal is to produce fresh bananas and Pineapple for the market. The project will reach its goal by establishing a 40.0 Ha banana plantation and a packaging house.
Advanced agricultural practices will be implemented in the project which will enable maximum yield and quality results.

The plant source will be imported small tissue culture plantlets that are disease free and resistant to the fusarium wilt race (according to pre- evaluation to be done) or to “Moko” bacterial wilt. The plantlets will be hardened in a net-house and replanted into larger growing bags in preparation to planting in the field.

High yielding bananas reach bunch weight in excess of 30 kg. This requires support of the bunch either with a bamboo stic

k or with an overhead cable system he banana trees can yield up to 9- 14 years, if the plantation is maintained correctly. The full yield will be reached at Year 2 of the project and will yield a total of 1,100 tons of bananas. The Pineapple yield will be around 1,000 tons annually.

Total forecast yield for the 40 Ha Bananas and Pineapple: 2,000 tons.
At the packing house the banana bunch will be cut into hands and soaked in a water bath to remove sap and clean the fruit. The bananas will then be sorted and packed in a box for market.

For supply in the local Nigerian market, there will be a cooling room into which an environmentally compatible ripening gas will be injected in order to ripen the bananas.
